Child Benefit
Child Benefit is a tax-free payment that you can claim for a child. There are separate rates payable for each child. The payment can be claimed by anyone who qualifies, whatever their income or savings and it does not matter if you are not the parent of the child in question.
Child benefit stops once the child has reached the age of 16 unless the child continues full-time 'non-advanced' education at school or college, or starts an 'approved' training course. The benefit will then stop once the child reaches 20, or once they leave ‘non-advanced’ education.
The only way to claim Child Benefit is to fill in a Child Benefit claim form and send it to the Child Benefit Office along with your child's birth or adoption certificate. You can't claim over the phone or the internet.
